Our experience has learned us that there are three mission-critical areas - or “dots on the i”. Dots that will define successful ITAM strategies in 2025 and beyond. And they are not optional - they are essential!
Blog - June 2025: Why ITAM leaders must act now to keep pace, stay strategic, and deliver business value.
Falling behind means losing strategic relevance
Let’s be honest: many ITAM teams are underwater.
You’re being asked to respond to sudden software audits, manage sprawling SaaS portfolios, align with security initiatives, From AI-driven workloads to decentralized IT environments - and still “do the basics.” Meanwhile, stakeholders expect real-time insights without offering the resources needed to deliver them.
And the challenges are about to intensify. If your team can’t meet the moment, here’s what’s at stake:
- Compliance failures and surprise audit penalties
- Out-of-control software spend with little visibility
- Missed opportunities to influence procurement, cloud strategy, and FinOps
Perhaps most critically, ITAM risks being seen as purely operational - rather than the strategic powerhouse it truly is. Without a clear voice, updated tools, and forward-thinking skills, you’ll struggle to get buy-in for what your function could - and should - be contributing.
Dot the strategic “i’s” of ITAM
So what now?
From our experience working with organizations across sectors, we’ve identified three mission-critical areas - or “dots on the i” - that will define successful ITAM strategies in 2025 and beyond. These are not optional. They are essential.
1. Embrace organizational needs without losing your own focus
ITAM doesn’t operate in a vacuum. But balancing strategic alignment with operational delivery takes structure. Here’s how:
- Build a flexible governance model that can respond to evolving business needs without derailing day-to-day workflows.
- Map stakeholders’ information needs and plot them on an annual ITAM calendar.
- Be clear about what your team can do - and what support you need in return.
2. Secure the right people and technology - on time
No single person can carry ITAM on their own. You need a realistic resourcing plan tied to your ambitions:
- Use FTE modelling and maturity frameworks to map your current capabilities against future needs.
- Define your ITAM scope clearly: enterprise-wide or local? Software-only or full infrastructure?
- Invest in tooling that supports growth and integrates with adjacent functions like FinOps and ITSM.
Success doesn’t come from overloading your current team - it comes from enabling them with the right people, processes, and tools.
3. Build and maintain future-proof skillsets
Your ITAM team needs more than licensing knowledge. You need:
- Strategic thinkers who can align ITAM with business goals
- Technologists who understand cloud, SaaS, and emerging infrastructure
- Communicators and storytellers who can advocate for ITAM’s value
- FinOps collaborators who speak the language of value and cost optimization
Upskill where possible. Restructure roles where necessary. Bring in outside expertise when gaps persist. The future of ITAM belongs to cross-functional, forward-looking teams.
The Time to Act is now
There’s no magic formula, no silver bullet. But there is a path forward.
By identifying these three critical challenges, your organization can shift ITAM from reactive cost-control to strategic enablement. And when you do, you don’t just manage assets - you add value, accelerate innovation, and gain a seat at the decision-making table.
