VMware accelerates application modernization?

Shortly after acquiring VMware, Broadcom moved swiftly to instigate changes. Without delay, Broadcom discontinued perpetual licenses* for VMware's products...

Blog - December 2023: Soon after acquiring VMware, Broadcom promptly initiated significant changes.

Existing perpetual license holders with active support remain unaffected, but Broadcom aims to attract these customers by slashing the subscription cost of its VMware Cloud Foundation hybrid cloud solution by half. As part of enhancing flexibility, Broadcom introduces a new option: a "bring your own subscription license" (BYOL) for VMware validated hybrid cloud endpoints operating VMware Cloud Foundation.

The long-term implications of this decision for Broadcom, its customers, and partners are yet to unfold. However, it's undeniable that this significant change in licensing will prompt IT professionals globally to scrutinize their VMware licenses, gauge the financial repercussions on their enterprises, and chart a strategic path ahead.

The  benefits of change are often unrealised, the perceived risk and effort required bring with them inertia. High impact changes like these from VMWare however can become the catalyst for change, unlocking the benefits through a cloud migration and modernization strategy.

A critical first step in a migration strategy is collecting application portfolio data to be evaluated. Among the established frameworks for this evaluation is AWS (Amazon Web Services) 7 R's, this categorizes application into 7 common application migration strategies. These strategies are refactor, replatform, repurchase, rehost, relocate, retain, and retire.

As you might be confronted with a decision in the very short term on your VMware estate, now is the time to create a robust cloud migration strategy, identify quick wins to relocate, rehost or even retire applications. Replatforming can deliver big results quickly and could be the quickest and most cost effective option for many applications with established and proven methodologies in place to support the migration.

Having a migration strategy allows an informed decision to be made for each application, with or without the use of VMWare technology. Critically it is the foundation that allows you to modernize applications, refactor and re-architect to use cloud native technology, improving agility, performance, scalability as well and delivering significant cost saving.
